January 6th, 2024 13:20In absence of other ideas, I think I'll use this as a quasi-diary until I decide not to. Old-fashioned blogging!
It's rainy and quiet in DC today. It's weird to think that there was an attempted coup here three years ago. The energy is just that of cold locals trying to keep out of the wet, not angry out-of-towners out for blood. Part of that is probably that I'm at the library, but the library isn't that far from the action. When there are protest marches, you can watch them go past; to get here in the first place, I pass the White House and several dozen assorted federal buildings.
I'm getting a head start on my assignments for the spring semester and I chose school shootings in young adult literature as my first paper topic, presumably because I'm some kind of masochist. Between the weather and spending two hours writing about dead kids, I'm in a pretty dreary mood, but at least I'll be ahead already when the semester actually starts on Wednesday.
